About

João de Nóbrega Pupo is a Portuguese sound artist, composer, researcher and art director. After completing a degree in Art and Multimedia at the Universidade da Madeira, he moved to Barcelona in 2016 to pursue a Master’s degree in Sound Art at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Universidade de Barcelona, followed by a Master’s in Animation and Digital Arts for AAA Video Games at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Throughout his career, he has participated in several group exhibitions and festivals dedicated to experimental and electronic music and has been invited as a speaker and composer at conferences held in Portugal, Spain, and France.

Before establishing himself as a solo artist, during his teenage years and early adulthood (2008–2026), he took part in several groups, as a vocalist, ranging from Metal to improvisational music, including Project Ø, PinPointing Madness, Impulse Paradox, Godwin-Austin, Mentecaptos, and BREU, as well as brief collaborations with bands such as Vice-Versa, Dead Silent, and Ye Olde Mammals.

As a sound artist, Pupo focuses on conceptual and intermedia composition, exploring data sonification techniques and the combination of field recordings with predominantly generative processes. His work reflects a deep interest in the intersection between sound and other forms of artistic expression, translating concepts into sensory experiences that balance strategy and aesthetics. He has released three works through the Lisbon-based label Colectivo Casa Amarela: Sonified Notations (2020), The Death of Truth (2021), and Ao ser sereno (2025); consolidating his presence within the contemporary and experimental music scene.

Alongside his artistic practice, he stands out as a creative professional with a strong inclination toward art direction, capable of guiding a project from its conception to completion with a coherent and distinctive vision. He particularly excels in the pre-production phase, where he defines, organizes, and conceptualizes visual and sonic universes with precision and intentionality, drawing on solid communication and leadership skills. His approach enables him to transform ideas into consistent narratives, articulating critical thinking, aesthetic sensitivity, and conceptual rigor.

In addition, he actively promotes auditory awareness through his research and essay project on sound, A Fonte Acusmática, as well as through theoretical-practical workshops and lectures focused on the practice of listening, using notions of acoustic ecology and psychoacoustics, addressed to public and private institutions and integrated into festival contexts. These initiatives reinforce his commitment to knowledge-sharing and to fostering new ways of experiencing and understanding the contemporary sonic environment.
